You may have wondered if someone would understand your predicament. You may have had difficulty explaining yourself. You may have felt that no one would have the time or care to listen. My name is Philippa Chin, and as your therapist, it is my privilege to be invited into your life and hear your story. My goal is to connect with you and help you achieve your goals so life will be less overwhelming, but rather, fulfilling and hopeful.
My Approach:
As a licensed couples and family therapist, I think in terms of systems. How do our partners, family system, work system, community system and societal systems affect us. In other words, how do these relationships and connections influence our mental health and what meaning our we attaching to them? I facilitate critical and culturally relevant discussions, leaving space for reflection and collaborative approach to reach you mental health goals. My approach is nonjudgmental, with a focus on enhancing one’s understanding and development of problems and solutions. The frameworks and interventions I use aim at relationship enhancement, stress reduction, conflict resolution and enhanced communication. I believe in being direct, honest, and using humor, so that clients look forward to growing and healing each session.
More about Me:
I hold several identities that inform my approach and way of being as a therapist. This includes, Black, Woman, Caribbean, Immigrant, Mother, Daughter, and Wife. It is hard to juggle all the expectations that work, school, family, friends and life has of you. On order to focus on yourself, one must be intentional and purposeful. And sometimes something else has to give way. This I understand fully. My life experience allows me to be humble, show empathy, and display a knowing of the experiences of those that struggle.
More specifically, I received a Master’s degree in Couples, Marriage and Family Counseling and a Doctorate in Counselor Education from William and Mary. My clinical experience includes providing family, couples, co-parenting, substance abuse rehabilitation, and individual therapy. As a Counselor Educator I conduct research and present at international and national conferences on ethnic and racial identity development, international counseling, and counselor education issues.
