Navigating the Crossroads: Grey Divorce and Discernment Counseling at The Relationship Center

by | Apr 21, 2026

As the landscape of modern partnership evolves, a significant trend has emerged in the clinical field: the “Grey Divorce.” Defined as the separation of couples over the age of 50—often after decades of shared history—these transitions require a specialized level of clinical care that honors both the past and the future.

At The Relationship Center, we provide a high-authority “Sanctuary” for couples standing at this pivotal crossroads. Since our founding in Orchard Park, NY, in 1999, we have expanded our commitment to clinical excellence across Williamsburg, Norfolk Waterside, East Beach, and Alexandria.

A Legacy of Clinical Leadership

Our practice is anchored by a team of trusted, experienced therapists who specialize in the complexities of long-term relational health. Under the clinical leadership of Dr. Victoria Holroyd, our team brings combined decades of expertise in navigating high-stakes life transitions.

  • Dr. Victoria Holroyd: A specialist in Discernment Counseling, Dr. Holroyd provides the structured, high-clarity environment needed for “mixed-agenda” couples (where one partner is leaning out and the other is leaning in).
  • Our Senior Clinical Team: Our staff includes veterans of the field who are master-level practitioners in Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS).

Established Sanctuaries: Privacy, Sophistication, and History

We understand that for our high-performing and high-profile clients, privacy is a requirement. Each of our locations is strategically chosen to offer a unique sense of place and professional discretion:

  • Orchard Park, NY: Our founding office, serving the Western New York community since 1999 with a deep-rooted legacy of relational healing.
  • Old Town Alexandria, VA: Located in the heart of historic Old Town, just one block from King Street, this sanctuary offers a discreet, sophisticated setting for our Northern Virginia and D.C. area clients.
  • Norfolk Waterside, VA: Tucked into the professional core of the Waterside District and just steps from the Nauticus, this location provides a high-end, urban sanctuary with expansive views of the Elizabeth River.
  • Williamsburg & East Beach: Our peninsula and coastal locations provide a “Sanctuary” environment for deep reflection near historic landmarks and the Chesapeake Bay.

What is Discernment Counseling?

Standard marriage counseling often fails for grey divorce candidates because the partners are not starting from the same place of commitment. Discernment Counseling is a short-term, high-structure intervention (1–5 sessions) designed specifically to help couples decide between three paths:

  1. Path One: Status quo; maintaining the marriage as it is.
  2. Path Two: Moving toward separation or divorce with clarity and peace.
  3. Path Three: A six-month “all-out” commitment to therapy with divorce off the table.

Clinical Excellence Across Generations

Across all our locations, we utilize a trauma-informed lens to address the complex attachment history present in mature marriages. By integrating Internal Family Systems (IFS), our therapists help clients de-escalate the “Protector Parts” that emerge during legal disputes, preserving family integrity, assets, and personal dignity.

Why Choose The Relationship Center?

  • 25+ Year Proven Legacy: Our roots go back to 1999 in Orchard Park, providing a depth of historical experience unmatched in the region.
  • Specialized Senior Staff: Our therapists are specialists in mature relational dynamics and discernment, not generalists.
  • Strategic Historic & Urban Settings: From the professional pulse of Norfolk Waterside to the historic charm of Old Town Alexandria one block from King Street, we offer environments that facilitate deep reflection.
